 This car is a right hand drive model first registered on 20th November 1968. A full length fold back sun-shine roof is fitted, together with period alloy wheels, radio and wood rimmed steering wheel. She was purchased from the first owner, Mr D Lloyd Thomas from Northants, on 28th May 1973 for £400 by Mr Colin Splatt who was then living in Eastcote Middlesex.

The vendor acquired the vehicle in March 2019 from Mrs Splatt who had been the main user of the car until taken off the road in 1988. From 1988 until his death in 2019, Mr Splatt, an Engineer, had made it a restoration project, including the replacement of the engine with a second-hand unit. The Splatts were avid Alfa fans, being club members, having several other models over a long motoring time-span. So ‘Whippy’ as she is known – is essentially a 2 owner car.

At some point in the car’s history, the four wings and sills were replaced with GRP versions, which has proved to be a major contribution to her current condition. The vendor understands the car was purchased in ’73 with these changes and untouched since then. The body appears to be in a very solid state. To authenticate the mileage there are the following to note;

There is an MOT report dated 20/01/78 with mileage at 65,278 –a  pass with no remarks.

A further MOT report dated 10/02/81 with mileage at 76,346 –a pass with 2 minor comments.

Last tax disc 30/06/1988  Mileage at 20/10/1987 was 84086. Mileage at re-commissioning in 2019 was 84704.

Re-commissioning in 2019.

The car had been stored since 1988 in Mr Splatt’s dry well ventilated garage/workshop. A replacement engine which had been fitted in 1978, was not seized, had clear oil, but was non-running. The clutch operated freely – with all gears present. Brake callipers were only partially seized and were easily freed to get the car rolling. There were numerous well labelled parts & spares in the car. The re-built  radiator dates from  2008, together with a new brake master cylinder – also 2008.

Cylinder compressions were checked and found to be uniform & good. The rotor arm and distributor cap were replaced to achieve a strong spark. However, whilst there was seemingly good fuel in the tank, it could not be coaxed along to the engine bay. Removal of a very sound tank revealed the delivery tube out of the tank to be completely blocked. This was cleared & the pump did its job. The Webers were non functioning and required deep cleaning to restore to full working order, especially the pump jets. The thermostat was removed to find it operated to temperature, but was nevertheless replaced. The interior heater element leaks and has been bypassed and needs replacing at some future point in time.

The original brake servo was leaking and was replaced with a 2.3 to 1 MGB unit. Calipers were freed and all flexible hoses renewed. Lines & connections are all good & serviceable.  New brake switch fitted. Replaced both front discs, with new pads all round. Both rear shock absorbers were renewed, together with both axle restraining straps. The front castor arm bushes were replaced and a front shock absorber gaiter. The centre prop-shaft bearing and housing were renewed. A new 3 section exhaust rearwards from the manifolds was fitted.   Gearbox, rear axle & steering box all topped up to levels. New battery fitted. The dynamo gives the appropriate output and regulates OK. Wipers, lights, horn, indicators, washers all function OK. All the instruments function as they should. The tyres are of varying ages, but all are perfectly serviceable with good tread. Ideally they could be renewed for high speed motoring.

Current situation:
The engine starts easily and pulls strongly. Gear change is easy with no adverse transmission noise from the gear-box or rear axle. Synchromesh is present on all gears.  The car runs sweetly and handles well, but could probably benefit from a rolling road session to set up the Webers.
The brightwork being stainless steel is in an excellent condition. The window glass is all unmarked and coded with the registration number. The original 5 pressed steel wheels are present & if preferred could be refitted. The hub caps are missing. The underside has been well undersealed  and appears to be well covered and remains attached.
According to Honest John there is only a handful of 1968 GT Juniors left. However, parts are freely available for a number of outlets to keep this old girl alive.

Auctioneers notes: The vendor has given a very full and frank description of this iconic Italian Sports Coupe.  He asked me to mention in my notes that she comes with a boot full of useful spares including oil filters, brake pads, plugs and points etc.  With reference to the fibre glass panels it is worth noting they were optional extras to the racing GTA coupes for weight saving reasons.  The invoice file, which is impressive, comes with lots of pamphlets, workshop manuals and a DVD maintenance disc, invoices from 1973.  We also have the last tax disc expiring 30th June 1988 and that was the last time she was on the road until this year.  I must say, when she arrived the engine sounded as sweet as a nut and she comes with a new MOT until 8th August 2020.  Please come and look, what a great starter classic and an Alfa to boot.  Sold without reserve.
