On the Surface: This 1935 Austin 10 Lichfield is presented in decent condition, retaining much of its original charm. Affectionately nicknamed ‘Esmeralda,’ this saloon displays the name proudly on each side of the bonnet. The vehicle was produced at the Longbridge works of the Austin Motor Company and first registered in Canterbury, Kent, in March 1935. Since its acquisition by the vendor’s late father in 2010, it has been residing in Somerset. Notably, the original semaphore indicator arms have been replaced with a modern flasher indicator system for enhanced road safety.
Maintenance & History: Apart from a repaint and an interior retrim, the Austin 10 remains largely original. The history file accompanying the car is comprehensive, featuring an array of documents including an original ‘Book of the Austin Ten,’ the October 2013 edition of the Austin Ten Driver’s Club Spare Parts list, old photographs, old tax discs, and various invoices totalling nearly £3,000. Significant among these is an invoice for interior reupholstering completed in 2014, which amounted to £1,525.50.
The Model: This Austin 10 Lichfield was built during a prolific production period between 1934 and 1935, with around 54,000 units made before the model was replaced by the Cambridge saloon in 1936. It features an 1125cc side valve engine with 21 BHP and a traditional braking system comprised of rods and levers. Originally priced between £150-£160, the Austin 10 has a wooden frame construction and plywood floors.
