Description:

Description from The Vendor: Austin 16/6 Burnham saloon Y.O.M. 1930 registered 1/1/1931.  This wonderful old car is in excellent condition with no known faults.  She still has the original leather seats and the rest of the interior is as the seats in superb condition.  The exterior bodywork as the interior is also in exceptional condition.  All five tyres are in good condition and she stands on wire wheels.  All lights work and the car is fitted with unobtrusive indicators which work well and do not look out of place on the car.  Mechanically the engine and gearbox are in the same wonderful condition as the rest of the vehicle having been rebuilt by Vosper Thorny -Croft during its restoration some years ago.  The oil pressure is excellent and the only gauge that doesn’t work is the petrol gauge.  This wonderful old car has to be warmed up after a starting procedure that takes about 20 minutes but that is part of the fun of running an old lady of this era, she is not a modern car!  I run her on Aspen 4 stroke rather than the modern petrol as Aspen will not deteriorate over time. Auctioneer’s notes: What a pleasure to go and see this 1931 Austin 16/6 which is in incredible condition for a 91 year old car.  These Burnham Saloons have a straight 6 side valve 2249 cc engine which gives this car the ability to get into top gear at an incredibly low speed of 10 MPH  and pull strongly to just under 60 miles per hour. The interior is fine, original leather with good woodwork and excellent carpets.  There is an interesting letter on file dated 30.1.79 to the previous owner and again a very interesting reply detailing all the work which had been carried out while in his possession, this includes various invoices from 1974 one of which is dated April ’75 from Vosper Thornycroft to re-bore the engine.  The correspondence you will find most interesting to read.  As you dig through the file you will come across road test reports from “The Autocar” dated 13.12.29 and another one from “The Motor” from the same period.  It makes fine reading and both magazines praise the car for its performance and comfort.  Also there are old MOT’s from 1976 and old tax discs from 1978 and what is really nice to see is the original buff log book dated 1931. The car still carries the original registration number  PL4588.  You may come and view this incredible car, strictly by appointment.
