This is a South African Mk1 mini, built and first registered in 1967, and imported to the UK in 2019. The South African Mk1s at this stage had external hinge doors, but instead of sliding windows, they have Australian spec wind up ones with quarter lights. They also have a 998cc A series engine instead of the 850cc unit in non-cooper UK cars. Other nice features are the chrome surrounds to the front windows, opening piano hinge rear windows, and centre console with oil and temp gauges.

This mini has clearly benefitted from the dry climate, and is still in very good rust-free condition, with excellent subframes, sills etc. And when work is needed nuts and bolts are easy to undo!

During lockdown it hasn’t had a lot of use, but has been spruced up a bit since 2019. Works include an unleaded head conversion with hardened valve seats, refurbished clutch and brake master cylinders, new steering rack and track rod ends, new water pump, various hoses, hydrolastic suspension service, drain and refill , new brake linings, new cream crackle head lining, new seat diaphragms, Austin Cooper grille, Monza fuel cap, new Mini Spares bumper set with corner bars, Maniflow cooper exhaust manifold, RC40 exhaust, and twin SU 1 1/4″carbs on a cooper manifold.

Registered as a historic vehicle , it is tax and MOT exempt, goes very well, sounds great, and in my opinion is just as much fun as a Mk1 cooper.
