1960 Bentley S2 78,389 (Not Warranted) £11,000- 11500

Description:

The vendor tells us he was lucky enough to inherit 571 UTO from his uncle in 2016 although the car has been a part of his family since July 1981. His uncle, Peter, was a chief marine engineer for P&O but when he wasn’t at sea, he would spend much of his time working on whatever classic car he had at the time, at his home in Kent. Peter purchased 571 UTO from a doctor in Deal, Kent in 1981 for £2,750. It was advertised in the local paper and he bought it on the spot. Like all his cars, the Bentley was for driving, not polishing and he used it daily for a number of years, in all weathers, including for work trips to London and beyond.
As such, this is no show pony. There are signs of use everywhere and some dents and blemishes to show her age but work has been done when necessary and she will provide reliable, comfortable and elegant transport for her new owner for many years to come.

There is not much service history as Peter was a competent mechanic and undertook his own service work. The car had a full service and engine tune by RR and Bentley independent, Specialist Cars of Exeter, in February 2019 and has had little use since.

Likewise, the vendor does not have all the MOT certificates. There is a 10 year gap in the MOT history, between 2007 and 2017 when the car was dry stored (due to illness). In 2016 the vendor had the car brought out of store, recommissioned and MOT’d (April 2017) before relocating to Devon. The car is now MOT exempt. The Webasto type folding sunroof was fitted before the family owned the car, so prior to 1981.

(Fairly) Recent Work includes:
Halogen headlights
Clock repaired
5 new tyres
New windscreen and rubber
Some wood refinished including dash rail, instrument binnacle, door caps, windscreen surround

More recently:
The vendor had the nearside rear body mount replaced (the other side had been done previously) and some additional welding done including fuel tank straps in November last year.

Additional Items:
An original handbook (bought separately so not the actual one supplied with the car)
Rolls Royce Silver Cloud/Bentley S Series workshop manuals
Rolls Royce Silver Cloud/Bentley S Series parts list
Dust Cover

Auctioneers Notes:
There is something majestic when you sit behind the wheel of these great cars, the bonnet stretches out before you like the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.  This V8 Bentley is no show queen but a very usable car to be enjoyed and driven as is.  Having been in the family since the early eighties, I find in the file that the MOT’s from ’82 up to GOV.UK MOT history in 2017 shows she has only covered between those 2 dates 11,643 miles.  For your enjoyment and reading, the new owner will find an original RR/Bentley Workshop Manual together with an auto gearbox manual plus 2 volumes of spares price list, dated 1960 plus the leather bound drivers handbook.  There are some invoices, the last one dated 21.2.19 for a 12,000 mile service and general repairs which came to over £3,100 pus a V5 and a V5C.  She is on our premises and may be viewed by appointment.
