Description:Auctioneers notes: The vendor of this car, which has been totally restored to a superb standard – is a private collector and has some 16 cars in his collection. Very little is known about the early history of this iconic car, but we do have the original service book which shows that she was supplied to a D M Swaby Esq. of London N14 – the supplying agent was Dagenham Motors Ltd. London W1 and the delivery date was 3.8.70. There are 6 stamps in the service book and importantly, it quotes the chassis no BB49KU32733, incidentally this matches the car and the log book. It tells us one more thing B equals British B equals Hailwood and 49 equals twin cam. She comes with a twin cam owners handbook and the airbox which sits on top of the engine. This item has not been restored.
How did the vendor come to own this car? For 20 years or more he competed in a BDA (which was up to works standard) on tar-mac rallying in the UK and the Irish Republic. Age was beginning to tell (not the car). So, when a fellow competitor suggested that he might like to sell his competition car to him, and “ in return you can have my twin cam” so, after a great deal of discussions a deal was struck. 2 years later and £44,668.42 paid over, the car was finished. There is a journal written by Denis Moody, Motor Sport, (a very respected racing engineer in the Ford world) covering 13 A4 size pages listing every single item and how much it cost under sub-headings, body shell, engine etc. So, why is this beautiful car being sold? The vendor enjoys his creature comforts, just look at the cars he has in his collection. When he drove the twin-cam (it has only covered 167 miles since restoration) he realised it was not the sort of car he wanted to drive around the New Forest. He said to me, my rally days are over and let somebody else enjoy this magnificent car. May be viewed by appointment as from as from 13.9.18. |
