On the Surface: Simply stunning example of an Escort XR3i, finished in Frozen White over a Grey and Blue cloth interior. The car has been in the ownership of The Vendor for the last 6 years and is presented in remarkable condition. Maintenance & History: This XR3i has undergone extensive work to achieve its current state, including a bottom-end engine overhaul, new oil pump, new cambelt, new water pump, and replacement valve stem seals. The fuel injection system has been overhauled, and new front brake calipers have been fitted. A full respray was completed in May 2021, adding to the car’s appearance. Additionally, a replacement sunroof will be supplied due to the current one showing signs of wear. The history file includes numerous old MOT certificates and invoices amounting to nearly £5,500. Notably, an invoice from 2022 details work on the brakes, clutch, suspension, and fuel system totaling £2,019.28. The file also contains an original XR3i information flyer, an original Ford brochure from 1985, and a Haynes manual for Escorts from 1980-1988. The car had been previously restored around 2012. The Model: The third-generation Escort, launched in September 1980 has become a bit of an icon of the Eighties. Ford’s addition of fuel injection to the XR3’s 1.6-litre engine in 1983 created a performance legend. While the Peugeot 205 GTi was known for its speed and handling, the Escort XR3i’s combination of sporty looks, affordability, and performance made it a popular choice among British motorists. Notable features included the eyecatching ‘cloverleaf’ alloy wheels and large black spoilers front and rear. By December 1989, the Mk III Escort was the most common car on British roads, with nearly 1.5 million registered. However, as of September 2023, only 370 XR3i examples remained registered in the UK.
