On the Surface: This beautiful 1968 Ford Mustang Convertible is a great example of the iconic American muscle car, finished in eye-catching Candy Apple Red with a Cream retractable soft top over a Cream leather interior. The car is also fitted with American Racing ‘Torque Thrust’ wheels with Ally caps. It has been in the hands of The Vendor for 18 years, with significant expenditire lavished on it since its purchase in July 2006.

Maintenance & History: Under The Vendor’s ownership, this Mustang has undergone extensive work to preserve its originality and ensure it’s both safe and enjoyable to drive. After being shipped from the U.S. in April 2005 and registered in the UK in July 2005, the car received its first MOT with a mileage reading of 68,533. A major milestone in its restoration came in 2007 when the rare Toploader 289 manual gearbox was rebuilt at a cost of £4,503, featuring short shift linkages to ensure positve gear changes. In 2009, extensive work was done on the car’s windows, door locks, and braking system, ensuring everything functioned qas should. This included the installation of new electric window regulators and modifications to both the doors and window frames to achieve proper fit and alignment. The car also received a brake inspection, hand brake repairs and electrical work, with the total cost of this project amounting to £4,207.88, carried out by Greenwood Motorsport in Hertfordshire.

More recently, in 2021, a comprehensive overhaul was undertaken, including new front and rear suspension, and a brake system upgrade to front discs and rear drums, with servo-assisted power brakes. This work, totalling £5,969.15, included a full engine service with replacement spark plugs, oil, filters, and antifreeze, carried out by Classic American Restoration Services of Waltham Abbey.

Imported to the UK in 2005, the car has been in the same ownership since 2006, with nearly £20,000 invested in its restoration and maintenance during this period. The comprehensive history file includes all MOT certificates, invoices, and documents related to its importation and registration in the UK.

The Model: The Mustang is a coveted classic. This example, a 1968 Convertible is packed with rarity. This example is equipped with the 289 4.7l V8 engine produces 271 BHP and we are sure it delivers a rawcous driving experience. The 4 speed manual gearbox is a rare find with only 10% of First Generation Mustang’s being equipped with one. The four-speed manual transmission, combined with the factory convertible configuration, enhances its collectibility, making this Mustang a standout among its peers.

Sale Insight: For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this Mustang presents a rare opportunity to own a well-documented, beautifully maintained example of a first-generation convertible with a manual transmission. With nearly two decades of careful ownership, documented upgrades, and restoration, the car is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
