Description:

In Brief:

  • Very original and honest example of XK140
  • One of just 839 FHC’s made in RHD
  • Registration document records just 3 owners from new
  • UK RHD matching numbers example
  • Finished in desirable ‘Racing Green’

On the Surface: This 1955 Jaguar XK140 Fixed Head Coupe (FHC) is a very original example, finished in the stunning racing green. It is one of just 839 XK140 FHCs made in right-hand drive, making it a rare find. The vehicle has had only three owners from new and has been in the vendor’s possession for nearly 10 years. This particular model represents a minimal number of XK140 FHCs currently registered for use on UK roads today.

Maintenance & History: The car comes with a comprehensive history file, including invoices, old tax discs, MOTs, magazine cutouts, the original green registration document and the heritage certificate. Invoices in the file amount to over £5,000, demonstrating a significant investment in its upkeep. The earliest MOT dates back to 1989, showcasing a long history of careful maintenance.

The Model: The Jaguar XK140 replaced the XK120 in September 1954, building on the immense popularity and success of its predecessor. Although the XK140 did not achieve the motorsport success of the XK120, due to Jaguar’s focus on the C-type and development of the D-type, it was a commercial triumph. This model retains the classic, flowing lines of the XK120 but includes many hidden improvements.

The XK140 featured a more powerful engine as standard, improved steering with a new rack and pinion system, tighter handling and a smoother ride achieved by replacing the old lever arm dampers with telescopic shock absorbers. The engine was moved forward, creating more cockpit space for taller drivers. The roofline was lengthened to accommodate two small rear seats and the windscreen was moved forward as well. Full bumpers and extensive chrome detailing gave the XK140 an executive look without overwhelming its simple, elegant lines.

The XK140 was available in three body styles: the Open Two Seater (OTS), the Drop Head Coupe (DHC), and the Fixed Head Coupe (FHC) which this example is. Additional options included the Special Equipment (SE) package with a ‘C-type’ head, boosting the power to a claimed 210bhp, as well as Overdrive and an Automatic gearbox.

Sale Insight: This 1955 Jaguar XK140 FHC represents an opportunity to own a very rare, original example. As part of a very limited production run of right-hand drive examples and with a large history file, this XK140 is a compelling choice for any classic car enthusiast or collector.
