Lotus Excel was the first Gran Tourer made. Based on Toyota power train who were Lotus partners, their interest was the development of their Supra GT. It was the first Lotus to have power steering, air con,faux wood dash, leather upholstery and comfortable ride but plenty of zoom. Suspension, air con, steering components, cam belt tensioner and water pump, electricals, Mintex brakes and new cylinders, upgraded headlamps & audio, stainless exhaust. All done in recent past. The vendor tells us this was a keeper but his health said no.
Developed from the Eclat, Lotus wanted a world beater to compete with the best. The Toyota partnership enabled Lotus to bring a seriously reliable car to market and yet keep the famous Lotus roadholding based on 50/50 weight balance. The Toyota power train was suitably breathed on by Lotus to give excellent performance. Air conditioning was an added bonus with incredibly comfortable front seats. This is an example of the marque which is just about to appreciate. The current no quibble insurance value is 9,000 to 12,000 means this car represents outstanding value at typically low classic insurance costs. Owners manual and a box of history comes with the car.

It is worth noting that under current government regulations this Lotus will have it’s MOT extended by 6 months upon expiry in July to 29th January 2021.
