Description:In Brief:
On the Surface: This 1950 MG Y Type Saloon is a beautifully presented classic, finished in a striking Two-Tone Turquoise and Cream, paired with a Green leather interior. The car features cream steel wheels that perfectly complement its vintage charm. Having been under the ownership of the previous custodian for 43 years and the hands of just 4 owner’s from new, this classic has been cherished over the decades. The Vendor purchased the vehicle for his wife in March, but unfortunatley she does not feel comfortable driving it hence it is now offered for a quick sale. Maintenance & History: Over the years, the MG Y Type has undergone extensive work to ensure it’s pristine condition. This includes a comprehensive body restoration, a fresh coat of paint at some point and a full engine rebuild in 2016. This example comes with a documented history file containing MOTs dating from 2009 back to 1980, an MG Y owner’s handbook, the V5 registration document, and an MG Y workshop manual. Notably, MOT mileage records indicate that the car “went ’round the clock” in 2007. This MG Y Type has a rich history of participation in the classic car community. It has been a frequent attendee at MG club events and the Classic & Performance Car Show at Tatton Park. In the 1980s, it was proudly exhibited at the Mouldsworth Motor Museum near Chester. The Model: Designed between 1938 and 1939, the MG Y Type was initially set for release at the 1940 motor show. However, production was delayed due to World War II as the factory shifted its focus to the war effort. Eventually launched in 1947, the Y Type was sold at a price of £671 11s 8d. This post-war model marked a significant development for MG, featuring a new, welded box-section chassis and coil and wishbone independent front suspension. The body design was crafted by Gerald Palmer, with front suspension engineered by Alec Issigonis and draughtsman Jack Daniels. Standard features included hydraulic drum brakes and rack and pinion steering. The 1250cc engine, shared with the TC Midget sportscar, ensured spirited performance and the Y Type’s chassis design would later be adapted for use in the TD and TF sportscars. Sale Insight: This particular MG Y Type Saloon offers an excellent opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to own a fantastic example of an MG Y Type. With its limited ownership, engine rebuild and substantial history file this example stands as a very good one. |
