Riley 9 HP Merlin 1936

Although the history file is not vast, we are able to pin the ownership of this vehicle from its date of manufacture 19.11.36 by the warranty card which shows a Mrs. M.J. Whitby was the new owner. We have a photocopy of an old brown log book which shows that Mrs Whitby still owned the car after the end of the war as shown in this log book when she registered it as was required at the time, dated 14/9/45 As this Registration Book is stamped by the local authority, date 19/11/61 we know that she was still the owner of the vehicle. Forward to the 27/4/70 there is a receipt to Mr. Davidson for £420 from Goadsby & Harding, Land Agents and Auctioneers – is it possible that they were acting on behalf of Mrs. Whitby? Mr. Davidson is the same person who owned the Jenson, which indicates to us that this lovely car has had very few owners in 82 years. She comes with instruction books, plus instruction on how to drive a pre-select gear box, a pamphlet on running in speed, a Lucas Running Instructions for electric lighting plus lots of other interesting bits. There is a letter from the Riley Motor Club, dated 12/6/70 which indicates that they know about this car. It is interesting to note that the seats in this car have inflatable air cushions and also there is correspondence with the DVLA regarding the registration numbers.

Auctioneers Notes: This is a very pretty, unmolested example of a ’36 Riley Sports Saloon – yes, she does need painting and possibly a little work on the interior, although the seats look in good order. I have to emphasise, although there are rust sports on the paint, this car is not suffering from rot. The doors shut as they did when they left the factory with that satisfactory clonk. It is a car which can be made into top condition without the usual massive reconstruction bills. Genuine enthusiasts, please ring for an appointment. Sold as a non running project.
