Description:In Brief:
On the Surface: This is a 1983 Rover SD1 3500 Vanden Plas presented in the very rare combination of right-hand drive with a manual transmission, originally imported from South Africa. It features a desirable Black exterior over a Bounty Blue interior. Although the car is generally in good condition, some areas require cosmetic attention. The vendor assures that the car’s time in South Africa has left the underside solid and well-preserved. Maintenance & History: Accompanying this Rover is a substantial history file, including the V5 registration document, South African motor vehicle license and clearance certificate, South African certificate of registration, numerous invoices totalling over £1,000, old MOT certificates and other assorted documents. Notably, the car has been valued by the Rover SD1 Club at £8,000! Imported into the United Kingdom in 1999, this SD1 is a unique survivor of the limited South African production run of just 14,376 units. The RHD, manual transmission specification, manufactured solely for the South African market, makes this car exceptionally rare. The substantial documentation included only adds value to this example. The Model: The Rover SD1, named after the “Specialist Division” of British Leyland, was produced from 1976 to 1986. The SD1 series, which was also marketed as the ‘SDS’ in South Africa, marked the final Rover-badged vehicles produced at the Solihull factory. The SD1 won the European Car of the Year award in 1977, cementing itself as one of the best executive cars of it’s era. For years after it’s production these cars have been under appreciated due to the tarnished reputation of BL cars, however, the SD1 much like other BL produced cars are starting to command great prices and finally getting the respect they deserve. Sale Insight: This Rover SD1 3500 Vanden Plas is a rare find, particularly with its RHD, manual transmission layout. The substantial history file, combined with the unique production background and collectible status, makes it a compelling acquisition for enthusiasts and collectors. With some cosmetic attention, this car has the potential to be a standout example of a historically significant model. |
