On the Surface: This 1963 Sunbeam Rapier IIIA is a stunning example , finished in Autumn Gold with Black detailing, complemented by a Black leather interior. A head-turner in any setting, it has been meticulously cared for and subtly improved by it’s current owner since acquiring it in our Autumn Classic Car Auction of 2023.

Maintenance & History: Accompanied by a comprehensive ring binder history file, this Rapier boasts an extensive record. Highlights include an original Sunbeam Rapier Owner’s Handbook, a buff logbook, a workshop manual and a plethora of invoices totaling nearly £18,000. The most recent maintenance, completed in May 2024, addressed engine performance and clutch operation, entailing:

  • Replacement of the clutch assembly and overhaul of the gearbox.
  • Installation of a single-carburetor conversion with a new Weber carburetor, Facet fuel pump, and ethanol-resistant fuel lines.
  • Resolution of exhaust manifold clearance issues
  • Overhaul of the rear hub assemblies, including new seals and bearings.
  • Rolling road testing for optimal carburetor calibration and engine performance.This work alone, totaling £8,618.40, ensures the Rapier operates at peak reliability and performance.

The Model: Originally produced by Rootes Group from 1955 to 1976, the Sunbeam Rapier evolved through two distinct generations. The Series IIIA, launched in 1961, maintained the styling of the Series III but introduced significant durability improvements, including increased engine capacity and a stiffer crankshaft. Though slightly slower than its predecessor, the IIIA was lauded for its robustness and reliability.
