Dubbed by many as “The World’s Worst Car”. In our view this is most unfair to this iconic cult car. After all nearly 3,000,000 Germans can’t be wrong (so popular it is reputed even Angela Merkel was unable to get her hands on one at the end of their production run!)
The 2 stroke 2 cylinder motor fires up on the button and goes like the clappers or should that read ‘Glockenspeil’. Also stops on a Pfennig and handles better than a bar of soap (a wet one anyway). The Duraplast body made from recycled wool, cotton fibres and resin is indestructible and is non recyclable itself. (won’t even burn) Bullet-proof mechanicals ensures these cars will last forever. What other car engine has no camshafts, valves, distributor, fuel pump, cooling system, timing belt/chain etc etc. Parts availability are excellent and are as cheap as chips. (Smell like them too!)
Best of all this malodorous, noisy, smoky car gives two fingers up to the tree huggers. Why not throw some old cooking oil in the tank in for extra effect as you cruise past your local organic shop!
This low kms (believed genuine) Kombi estate was driven some years ago from Germany to that faraway European outpost of County Cork after the fall of the Wall. Has spent the last few years garaged and only taken out to local shows by its German owner. Just recommissioned with rebuilt starter motor, brake and suspension overhaul. The vendor reports its drives without fault and everything works and that it is in much tidier condition than most on the market.
