Lot No: 40

1971 BMW 1600-2 106,977 £7,700 + buyers premium

Description:

Description from The Vendor:

This 1600-2 E10 BMW appears to have been a special build, this is a 1600-2 which ceased production in 1970, but was built 17th Mar 1971 using an old stock shell, and is fitted with a 2002 Tii twin hydraulic braking system.

The 1600-2 BMW is the original 2-door coupe, a predecessor to the 1602 & 2002 which in turn became the E21 model and the forerunner of the mighty BMW 3 series.

The car originally left the factory in Orange (Colorado 002) but the second owner was an Army Major who sold it to a fellow soldier in 1980, he exported the car to Cyprus when he was located there, but then re-patriated it in 1983.

His ownership continued until 2012, but around 2000 he had the car fully rebuilt, including the engine, mechanicals and body using many new parts (at a cost of £7631.22), at this time it also had the subsequent colour change to Deep Brunswick Green which we think rather suits the car and the era (Deep Brunswick Green (code 227 BS:381C) is an army colour he would have been very familiar with, and subsequently the colour of The Flying Scotsman’ steam train).

His ownership ceased in 2012 when the car changed owners a couple of times until 2013 when it was bought by a local man who cherished the car, until recent years when a family member became ill and the car was left, covered but not driven. It was then bought by the vendor in 2021 and has undergone recommissioning, and tidying up to bring it into its present condition. The car is solid, reliable and ready to be driven away.

Auctioneer’s notes:

This is a very presentable 1600 and they have become very collectable cars today.  This one has a comprehensive history – see Appendix 1 – and without doubt the mileage could well be correct but you will note that there are no dealer stamps on the Service Book.  In the Book Pack, as well as the Service Book it has the Owners Handbook and the European Service Location Book. There are also a number of invoices covering servicing, brake servo reconditioning, re-manufacturing engine mounting, and also other invoices for complete brake overhaul and general tuning and servicing the engine, which leads me to the technical specification of these E-10’s  The engine is a 4 cylinder SOHC of 1602cc  producing 85 bhp at 5700 rpm.  Incidentally, these cars were manufactured from 1971 – 1975 and they can reach 100 mph and 0-60 in 12.6 seconds.  This is a super little car and please do not forget to book your slot to view her.
