The Riley Elf is based on the original Alec Issigonis Mini and was first produced in 1961 along with the similar Wolseley Hornet. The Riley version was the more expensive of the two cars and is distinguished by the Riley grille and badging. The cars used a modified Mini body shell and featured an elongated nose/front wings to incorporate the upright grille designs. More importantly, the rear of the car was considerably different, longer rear wings provided a much larger boot and gave a distinguished look. This model is the Mk III version produced in 1967. It was advertised as the most luxurious small car in the world, with leather seats, wind-up windows, fresh air vents and a walnut dashboard. The engine is the BMC A-series unit of 998cc producing 38bhp, giving a top speed of around 75 mph and 32 miles per gallon. 31,000 were produced and about 360 are registered with the DVLA at present. NJB 566F has been fully restored in the early 2000’s and has had extensive recent work on the hydrolastic fluid suspension system and brakes plus rear floor and rear sub-frame restoration. The name “Riley” is famous for its motorsport history over the past 100
years, finishing with four works cars in the first 10 finishers in the 1934 Le Mans 24-hour race. If you go to any Classic Car Race meeting you are sure to see many Riley’s competing and winning events. The famous name is now owned by BMW and it is hoped that one day, a BMW Mini will sport the Riley badge.

This is a very good example of this rare car – see Appendix 1 which shows a note from the vendor about this Riley Elf.  She really does present very well and this impish Elf has a folder full of invoices plus 16 old MOT’s.
