Description:

We received the below letter from the vendor and after proof reading it we decided we couldn’t change a word!

The story of my 1968 SS350 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible.

It begins in the Lake District on holiday driving my Transam of “Bandit” fame. With narrow mountainous roads, scarce petrol stations and LH driving making my wife face oncoming traffic, I returned home to “I am never going in that thing again.”
In a fit of pique I advertised my 6.6 litre, a man came up from London and I cried as I watched my “Bandit” drive away.
I am in the American Auto Club without an American Car. Turn to the Classic American mag: A Camero Convertible leaps out, I have never had a convertible but it is in Somerset and I do know it will just about fit in my tiny garage (tiny even though I built it myself my selfish neighbour wouldn’t let me build it on half his drive!).
That was in 1990 and I am still friendly with Fred who sold me the car after he reduced the price by £2000.
So began my love for the car, any component looking shabby had to be replaced. I can’t say it has been restored, it never needed it and I am no mechanic, I am a builder, so it has had loving care. The cost never mattered, spread over 28 years.
It was never an everyday user, just for fun and car shows and local shows only. If there were clouds in the sky I still went but in my Mercedes.
It has never been rained upon or washed, how would you wash a car that never gets dirty? If there is a speck of rust on the car I would like to know where it is.
I have never modernised the car, I am an old man, I like old drum brakes, old valve radios and young women.
It had a 4 page spread in Classic American Magazine, they called it a keeper. After turning up at one show wearing my slippers, I have to ask, is it time for a new keeper?

Auctioneers notes: This is a remarkable car owned by a remarkable man, 86 years young. We have printed his letter to us “the story of my 1968 SS350 Chevrolet Camaro Conv” in full. In the history file, the magazine Classic American, issued in September ’12 is a 4 page article including photographs of the vendor. Ron (the vendor) has kept in touch with the previous owners in the States and exchanges Xmas cards with them, there are 3 letters from 2 of the previous owners, it all helps to support the providence of this superb car. Included in the “American File” is a very important document called a Certificate of Title State of Florida, dated 8.12.89 showing the mileage to be 77,616 as correct. In the UK File, which Ron has kept meticulously, are all the MOT’s from 1990, mileage 80,077 till today which shows the car has covered just over 11,000 odd miles in the past 28 years. Also there is a very comprehensive file of invoices from that period. To finish, while this car was in Ron’s ownership, she has never been out in the rain and it is Ron’s wish that this car, which he loves, goes to a new owner who will appreciate it. She really is in tip top condition.
