A very tidy example of an early CP-prefix Triumph TR6, finished in Red over a Tan leather interior with a Black soft top. This UK-market petrol-injected TR6 has been in the care of the current keeper for the last 32 years, having been acquired as a non-runner before being restored and improved over a number of years. With its long-term ownership and extensive history file, this is a well-presented example of one of Triumph’s most celebrated six-cylinder sports cars.
An older restoration of the chassis and body was carried out circa 1995, with the engine overhauled and the interior retrimmed around 1998. The engine work is said to have included a rebore to +20 thou, a balanced crankshaft, a lead-free cylinder head conversion, attention to the metering unit and numerous new or reconditioned components. A Bosch fuel pump conversion and alternator were also fitted, offering practical upgrades to the TR6’s original fuel-injection system. The car presents as a very tidy example, benefiting from the considerable work carried out during the current keeper’s long-term ownership.
The accompanying history file includes MOT certificates dating back to 1989, when the recorded mileage was 8,467 miles, through to 2018 at 26,029 miles. Also included are restoration photographs, parts invoices and receipts, restoration invoices and a previous V5. The documentation on file helps chart the car’s restoration and ongoing upkeep. Having been acquired by the current keeper as a non-runner, this TR6 has clearly been the subject of significant time, care and expenditure over the last three decades.
Introduced for the 1969 model year, the Triumph TR6 represented the final development of the traditional separate-chassis TR line. Although its sharp, squared-off styling was penned by Karmann, the TR6 retained much of the proven TR4A/TR5 architecture beneath the skin, including body-on-frame construction, four-wheel independent suspension, front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. All TR6s were powered by Triumph’s 2.5-litre straight-six engine, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, with Laycock de Normanville overdrive available as an option which is included on this car on 3rd and 4th gear. The early CP-prefix UK-market cars are particularly sought after, using the Lucas mechanical petrol-injection system shared with the TR5 and producing the desirable 150 bhp output. With only 8,370 TR6s sold in the UK out of total production of 91,850, home-market examples remain especially appealing to enthusiasts.
This 1973 Triumph TR6 offers the right combination of desirable CP-prefix specification, long-term ownership and an extensive history file. Benefiting from an older chassis and body restoration, later engine overhaul, retrimmed interior and sensible upgrades including a Bosch fuel pump conversion, it presents as a very usable and attractive example of the breed. A fine opportunity to acquire a well-documented TR6 with over three decades of continuous current ownership.
