In Brief:

  • A chance to restore one of BMW's legendary M-Cars
  • Finished in Grey over a Black leather interior
  • Owned by the current keeper for the last 23 years - unused for 20 years
  • 5 former keepers

On the Surface:

An exciting opportunity to acquire a first-generation BMW M5 project car — the model that defined the performance saloon segment. This UK-supplied right-hand-drive example has been in long-term storage for the past 20 years and now presents as a highly rewarding candidate for full restoration.

Maintenance & History:

Registered in 1987, D631 JHX has been owned by the current keeper for the past 23 years and has had five former keepers. It is accompanied by a small history file containing a handful of invoices for previous servicing and MOT certificates dated 2005, 2004, and 2002. After two decades of inactivity, this M5 will require a comprehensive body and mechanical restoration before returning to the road. Prospective buyers should anticipate attention to all major systems, including the drivetrain, suspension, braking and electrical components, as well as refurbishment of the bodywork and interior.

The Model:

The first BMW M5, based on the E28 5 Series, was produced from October 1984 to June 1988, debuting at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. Built on the 535i chassis, it featured significant mechanical enhancements — most notably the M88/3 3.5-litre straight-six engine, derived from the legendary M1 supercar and shared with the M635CSi. Producing 282bhp, the E28 M5 was, at its launch, the world’s fastest production saloon, blending understated looks with extraordinary performance. Hand-built in limited numbers, only a small quantity were supplied to the UK, making surviving examples increasingly scarce.

Sale Insight:

Now emerging from long-term storage, this 1987 BMW M5 represents an excellent opportunity for the enthusiast or restorer to bring a genuine E28 M5 back to life. With its iconic engine, motorsport heritage and limited production numbers, the model continues to appreciate among collectors. Once restored, D631 JHX has the potential to become a highly desirable and valuable example of BMW’s original M-car legend.
