A distinctive example of one of Britain’s most technically ambitious post-war motorcycles, this 1947 Ariel Square Four represents Ariel’s prestigious 1,000cc touring flagship. With its unusual four-cylinder engine, imposing appearance and reputation for exceptionally smooth power delivery, the Square Four remains one of the most recognisable British motorcycles of its era.

Maintenance & Condition:

History:

No supporting history is present with this example. Dating from 1947, it nevertheless belongs to an important period in Ariel production, when the Square Four sat at the top of the manufacturer’s range and offered performance and refinement well beyond that of many contemporary motorcycles.

The Model:

Designed originally by Edward Turner, the Ariel Square Four became famous for its ingenious four-cylinder engine arrangement. In 997cc 4G form, the engine effectively comprised two parallel twins positioned one behind the other, with twin crankshafts geared together within a compact power unit. Producing approximately 40bhp, contemporary performance figures suggested a top speed approaching 100mph, although the Square Four was valued as much for its considerable low-speed torque and smoothness as outright performance. 

Post-war examples benefited from telescopic front forks with hydraulic damping together with Ariel’s Anstey-link plunger-type rear suspension, giving the machine a comfortable and composed touring character. A single SU carburettor supplied the four-cylinder engine, while its substantial power and torque also made the model particularly well suited to sidecar use.
