Auctioneer's Notes:

A characterful 1948 Vauxhall J-Type, offered after approximately nine years in the Vendor's ownership. Purchased with the intention of carrying out a running restoration, the car has instead been kept operational and enjoyed as part of a collection. Now offered for sale as the Vendor reduces the number of cars in his ownership.

Maintenance & Condition:

The Vendor advises that the braking system was overhauled shortly after purchase and has been filled with silicone brake fluid, with a quantity supplied for topping up if required. The brakes are currently working, although the Vendor advises that caution should be exercised as the drums may have become glazed.

The alternator belt is currently shredding and will require replacement. A small quantity of spares accompanies the car, including two new tyres still wrapped in protective tape and a new oil filter, together with several receipts for replacement parts.

History:

There is no substantial service history with the vehicle, although the accompanying documentation is particularly appealing for the enthusiast. The file includes an original first-edition 12hp and 14hp Instruction Book, together with a Maintenance Book and Service Repair Manual, providing useful period reference material for the model.

The Vendor has owned the Vauxhall for approximately nine years, during which time it has been kept running rather than subjected to a full restoration.

The Model:

The Vauxhall 14-6 J-Type was introduced shortly before the Second World War, with production resuming after hostilities and continuing until 1948, making this example one of the final-year cars. Powered by Vauxhall's 1,781cc overhead-valve six-cylinder engine, the model offered notably smooth performance for a British family saloon of its era.

The J-Type was also technically advanced for its time, using unitary body construction and Vauxhall's distinctive Dubonnet independent front suspension. Its six-light body, divided rear window and traditional upright styling make it an immediately recognisable example of post-war British motoring.
