A wonderfully period example of Ford's flagship Cortina, this 1982 Ford Cortina Ghia 4-door Saloon is finished in an attractive Champagne Gold Metallic over a complementary Brown and Beige interior. As a final-year Mk5 Ghia, it represents one of the most comprehensively appointed versions of the Cortina before the model was replaced by the Sierra. Period auxiliary driving lamps, alloy wheels and its distinctive Ghia detailing complete the classic early-1980s appearance.
The history file demonstrates regular servicing and maintenance over many years, with invoices and records dating from 2000 through to 2021 showing continued attention to keeping the car roadworthy. The Vendor reports that it continues to run and drive well, although the automatic choke has been disabled and it can consequently take a little longer to start from cold, something prospective buyers should bear in mind with a vehicle of this age. Its most recent MOT was completed in 2022, with the car becoming eligible for historic vehicle MOT exemption from 2023.
A particularly pleasing aspect of this Cortina is its accompanying paperwork. The file includes a substantial collection of MOT certificates dating from 1996 to 2019, together with old tax discs, the original Operation and Care booklet, UK dealer guide and period information relating to the fitted Pioneer radio.
Introduced as an evolution of the Mk4, the Mk5 – often referred to as the Cortina 80 – became the final generation of one of Britain's most familiar family cars. The Ghia sat at the top of the range, offering a more luxurious specification with upgraded interior trim, additional brightwork, wood-effect cabin detailing and a generally more upmarket presentation. Retaining the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout for which the Cortina had become known, the model remained a hugely popular choice with both private buyers and company-car drivers until production concluded in 1982.
With its desirable Ghia specification, final-year production, distinctly period colour combination and substantial supporting history, this Cortina offers plenty of appeal as an increasingly nostalgic example of Ford's once-ubiquitous family saloon. The long run of MOT certificates and maintenance records is particularly welcome, while the surviving period literature and handwritten notes add further character to the history file. A charming classic Ford with clear usability and strong 1980s presence.
