A charming and highly usable example of the legendary Ford Model T, this 1917 example offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of the most significant cars in motoring history. Imported from the USA in around 1990, it presents as an appealing early 20th-century motor car with sensible upgrades aimed at improving drivability and usability, while still retaining the unmistakable character of Ford’s world-famous “Tin Lizzie”. Fitted with Rocky Mountain brakes and benefiting from an improved engine oil system, this Model T is reported to be in good running order. The car is reported to be in good running order and has been fitted with desirable Rocky Mountain brakes, a popular period-style upgrade that improves braking performance over the original transmission brake arrangement. History:

This Model T was imported from the USA in around 1990 and is accompanied by a pleasing history file. Documentation includes old registration documents, along with the original copy of the title issued in Philadelphia in 1975. Also included are MOT documents, printed photographs, various Model T guides and advice sheets, and a copy of The Magazine of the Model T Ford Register from 2000. Together, these items form a useful and interesting supporting file, particularly for a car of this age. 

The Model:

Introduced in 1908, the Ford Model T became one of the most important and influential cars ever produced. Its simple, rugged engineering and Henry Ford’s pioneering use of the moving assembly line made motoring accessible to millions and transformed personal transport across the world. By 1917, the Model T had evolved from the earlier brass-era cars, with brass trim largely phased out and replaced by more subdued black finishes and nickel or zinc detailing. The 1917 model year also brought more modern styling, including a larger, sleeker bonnet and restyled wings. Powered by a 2.9-litre side-valve four-cylinder engine producing around 20 bhp, the Model T used a distinctive two-speed planetary transmission, controlled by three pedals and a floor-mounted lever. Lightweight, durable and famously simple to maintain, the Model T was capable of approximately 40 mph and earned an unrivalled reputation for dependability. During the First World War period, the Model T also played a practical role beyond civilian transport, with many examples adapted for military, ambulance and utility use.
