Auctioneer's Notes:

This charming 1953 Austin A30 AS3 has been in the Vendor’s ownership since 1983, representing more than four decades of long-term custodianship. An early-production example, believed to be approximately number 12,500 of 29,999 AS3 models produced, it displays the distinctive features associated with these early cars, including the Austin wings above the radiator grille, circular speedometer and cantilever-style boot lid. The Vendor advises that the car underwent a comprehensive restoration around 25 years ago, including an engine rebuild, retrim and respray, with two new-old-stock front wings also fitted. Following completion, it was kept in a dry garage and has covered very little mileage since. As the photographs demonstrate, it continues to present very smartly today, with glossy black paintwork complemented by an attractive red interior.

Maintenance & Condition:

The restoration carried out approximately 25 years ago included an engine rebuild, body repaint and interior retrim. The Vendor also sourced and fitted two new-old-stock front wings as part of the work. Since restoration the Austin has remained dry stored and has seen very limited use. An invoice dated April 2026 totals £588 for work undertaken to return the car to roadworthy condition following its extended period of storage. The exterior retains a pleasing finish, while the red interior appears particularly well preserved and complements the black bodywork very effectively.

History:

The Vendor purchased the A30 in 1983 for £215, with the original handwritten purchase receipt remaining within the accompanying history file. The mileage of 41,200 is believed to be correct, supported by the available MOT history. Documentation is particularly appealing and includes the original buff-style log book, original workshop manual, the green “Cassell Book”, maintenance and running instruction guides for the Austin A30 “Seven”, an Austin A30 and A35 motor manual and a lubrication chart. Also included are various parts catalogues, owners' club magazines, newspaper cuttings, several invoices predominantly dating from around 1980–1985, some historic MOT certificates and a cardboard sign believed to have been displayed with the vehicle during its restoration.

The Model:

Introduced in 1952, the Austin A30 was an important model for the company, being Austin’s first car to employ unitary body construction and the first production model to use the now-famous A-Series engine. The early AS3 specification was produced from 1952 into 1953 and was offered as a four-door saloon. Power came from the 803cc overhead-valve four-cylinder A-Series engine, driving through a four-speed manual gearbox. Early AS3 cars are readily distinguished from later A30 variants by details including the separate Austin winged badge positioned above the radiator grille, circular dashboard speedometer and other early-production fittings. These features, together with its compact proportions and traditional styling, give the AS3 a particularly characterful appearance.

Sale Insight:

A very appealing early Austin A30 with an unusually long period of ownership, extensive period documentation and a restoration that has evidently stood the test of time. Its early AS3 specification, attractive black-over-red colour combination and wealth of original literature add considerably to its charm. Having been owned by the Vendor since 1983 and recently recommissioned for road use, this is a well-presented example of one of Austin’s most significant post-war small cars and should appeal equally to marque enthusiasts and collectors seeking an approachable 1950s British classic.
