A great example of the ever-popular MG Midget, finished in Vermillion Red with a Black soft top over a Black leather interior. The car has been owned by The Vendor for the last two years and benefits from notably low ownership, having had just one former keeper from new. One of Britain’s most recognisable classic roadsters, this Midget presents as a charming and usable example.
The car has seen a number of recent improvements including new carpeting to freshen the interior along with the fitment of a new alternator and regulator. Replacement gaskets have been fitted to both the top and bottom of the engine, with the engine itself having been replaced at 95,000 miles. These works are supported by accompanying invoices within the history file.
Accompanying the vehicle is a comprehensive history file which includes MOT certificates along with numerous invoices for parts, servicing and maintenance, including documentation supporting the aforementioned work. Also included are a Midget Mk III handbook, an original MG “Passport to Service” booklet and a letter from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust confirming the year of manufacture. The Passport to Service contains four stamps for services completed between 1973 at 1,163 miles and 1974 at 18,414 miles, and also records a detailed diary of work carried out on the vehicle between 1976 and 1999.
The MG Midget Mk III featured the enlarged 1275cc A-Series engine derived from developments seen in the Mini-Cooper ‘S’. Although detuned to produce around 65 bhp, it offered lively performance in the lightweight Midget chassis. From January 1972 the rear wheel arches became rounded, while a Triumph steering rack was introduced to provide slightly lower gearing for improved steering feel. Additional refinements included the addition of a second exhaust silencer and, from 1973 onwards, alternators replacing the earlier dynamo charging systems.
With just one former keeper, a strong history file including factory literature and Heritage confirmation and evidence of recent maintenance including a replacement engine, this Mk III MG Midget represents an appealing opportunity to acquire a well-documented example of one of Britain’s most iconic classic sports cars.
