A well-documented 1972 MG B GT, offered with a particularly impressive history file and a number of desirable upgrades. The Vendor reports that the car benefits from polybushing all round, a working overdrive, a Webasto roof and a rear differential rebuilt by Phoenix. A previous owner’s summary, understood to date from around 2017, also notes a WASO alarm system, Moto-Lita steering wheel, telescopic rear shock absorbers, Kenlow fan, stainless steel exhaust, unleaded cylinder head, detailed engine bay and oil cooler.
The accompanying file records a considerable level of long-term maintenance and improvement. Invoices include rust removal, rewelding and respraying to the rear wings, radio system fitting, and extensive welding work carried out in 2016 at a cost of £1,200. This is supported by an astonishing collection of further invoices dating back to 1993, suggesting a car that has received consistent care and attention over several decades. A valuation sheet from Falla Classics, accompanying a 1999 sale invoice, marked the vehicle as being in “superb” condition in every assessed category at the time. The history file as a whole shows an astounding amount of care and attention, and really should be seen to be believed.
The paperwork is a real highlight of this MG B GT. It includes printed photographs from 1993 to 1999, some featuring personal notes and valuation processed stamps from the MG Owners’ Club Insurance Scheme on the reverse, with others showing the car attending shows. Also included are an MGOC accessories catalogue from 2019, MGOC recommended supplier directory, MGOC details, radio instruction manual, driver’s handbook, photocopied magazine clippings featuring the model, and a printout of MGB information from the MGB enthusiast website. A British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate is also present, confirming the car’s manufacture date from the archive. The file further contains a sale invoice for £6,500 in 1999, together with the Falla Classics valuation sheet, and a later sale invoice showing the vehicle sold to the current Vendor through our auction in 2018 for £4,000.
The 1972 MG B GT is one of the most desirable versions of the long-running MGB line, being a chrome-bumper example produced before the later rubber-bumper cars of the mid-1970s. Styled by Pininfarina, the GT combined the proven mechanical package of the MGB Roadster with a more practical fixed-roof 2+2 body and useful rear tailgate. Powered by the familiar 1.8-litre B-Series four-cylinder engine, the MGB GT offered around 95 bhp when new, with many cars benefiting from the highly desirable four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. With a top speed of just over 100 mph, accessible parts supply and strong enthusiast support, the model remains one of the most usable and rewarding British classics of its era.
This MG B GT stands out not only for its Webasto roof, working overdrive and choice upgrades, but for the depth and quality of its history file. Chrome-bumper MGB GTs continue to be especially popular with enthusiasts looking for a usable, elegant and well-supported classic. With its documented history, practical upgrades and long-term evidence of care, this example should hold strong appeal to anyone seeking a characterful and highly usable British GT.
