This is a project example of the much-loved Mk1 Mazda MX-5, offering a basis for restoration. Finished in Red with a Black soft top and cloth interior, this NA-generation roadster has been with The Vendor for the past three years and has spent the last six months laid up on the drive. Evident corrosion is visible around the body, and some mechanical recommissioning may also be required before returning to the road.
The car presents as a project, with body corrosion and the expectation of further cosmetic and mechanical work. The odometer reads 175,507 km (approximately 109,000 miles). While currently off the road, it has previously been maintained throughout its life, as reflected in the documentation provided.
Imported into the UK in 1998, this MX-5 has had 3 former UK keepers. It is accompanied by a comprehensive history file including old MOT certificates, numerous invoices for servicing and repairs over the years, and a stamped service record. The Service Book contains 9 stamps for services carried out between 1998 at 49,062 km and 2004 at 146,855 km.
Launched in 1989 and produced until 1997, the first-generation MX-5 revitalised the lightweight roadster market. Inspired heavily by the Lotus Elan, the naturally aspirated model is famed for its balanced handling, mechanical simplicity and iconic pop-up headlights. Early cars were powered by a 1.6-litre engine producing 116 bhp, with the 1.8-litre version introduced in late 1993 which this example uses. A five-speed manual gearbox came as standard, with a four-speed automatic—like the one fitted to this car—offered as an option. The model received widespread acclaim, including multiple Car and Driver 10Best awards and the 1990 Automobile Magazine Automobile of the Year.
With enthusiasm for early MX-5s continuing to rise, this car represents a worthwhile project for an enthusiast keen to return a first-generation MX-5 to the road.
