A lovely example of the desirable Lotus Europa Type 74 Twin Cam, finished in Red over a Black interior and powered by the celebrated 1,558cc Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine. With its low-slung profile, lightweight construction and mid-engined layout, the Europa remains one of the most distinctive and rewarding British sports cars of its era. This example has been in the care of the current keeper for the last 13 years and presents as an appealing classic Lotus with a well-documented period of recent ownership.
During the current keeper’s ownership, approximately £8,000 has been spent with marque specialist S.J. Sportscars Ltd who are Lotus specialists to bring the car up together and keep it in usable order. Works carried out include braided brake hoses, attention to the braking system, work to the choke and carburettors, an engine clean, new water pump, new big end bearings, suspension work including fitment of adjustable suspension and much more. The history file includes invoices for the work completed during this period, helping to evidence the level of care and expenditure applied to the car.
Owned by the current keeper for the last 13 years, this Europa is accompanied by a history file containing invoices relating to its current ownership, along with information on the Europa Twin Cam and other assorted documentation. The file provides useful supporting detail for prospective buyers and helps to chart the maintenance carried out in recent years.
Introduced to the public in 1971, the Type 74 Europa Twin Cam brought the 1,558cc Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine to the Europa range, producing around 105bhp in standard form. The model also benefitted from a redesigned bodyshell intended to improve rearward visibility, while retaining the Europa’s famously low, aerodynamic shape and mid-engined balance. Early Twin Cams used the gearbox carried over from previous Europa models, before the stronger Renault Type 352 four-speed gearbox was introduced in 1972 once earlier supplies had been exhausted. In total, 4,710 Type 74 Europas were produced.
The Lotus Europa Twin Cam offers a highly engaging classic driving experience, combining lightweight construction, mid-engined handling and the characterful Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine. This Red over Black example benefits from long-term current ownership, a useful history file and significant recent expenditure with S.J. Sportscars Ltd, making it an attractive proposition for those seeking a spirited classic Lotus.
