This tidy example of a 1964 Sunbeam Rapier Series IV is finished in two-tone Green over a Black leather interior, complemented by Green piping. Enhanced by the Series IV-specific design revisions such as the flatter bonnet and alloy side grilles. A fabricated dashboard has been installed by the previous owner, though the original dash is included and ready for refurbishment.
The Sunbeam comes with a particularly impressive history file, which includes the original purchase invoice from 1965 when it was bought for £998, a Rootes 1600 manual, MOT certificates dating back to 1981, numerous invoices for maintenance and servicing, a period spares brochure and even an original Series IV sales advert. Mechanically well cared for, this matching-numbers car benefitted from a full engine rebuild in March 2021, which included the fitment of a reconditioned radiator. The clutch was also replaced by a previous owner. Additional enhancements include electronic ignition, cunifer brake lines and a stainless steel exhaust system, improving both reliability and drivability. The car is currently MOT’d until September 2025.
The Sunbeam Rapier Series IV was introduced as a transitional model in 1963, evolving from the earlier Series IIIA. Designed more as a refined touring saloon than a sporting coupe, the Series IV incorporated design changes such as 13-inch wheels, Rootes corporate hubcaps, a flatter bonnet, and revised front wings with alloy side grilles. A total of just 9,700 Series IV units were built before production ceased in 1965, making this a relatively rare and collectible model.
Purchased by The Vendor earlier this year, plans have since changed and he is now unable to carry out any further work on the car. As such, this well-presented Rapier is offered for sale with a wealth of documentation and recent investment, making it an appealing prospect for an enthusiast.
