Auctioneer’s Notes:

A fine example of the charismatic TVR Chimaera 400, this 1997 model offers the classic recipe of a lightweight composite body, muscular Rover V8 power and an involving 5-speed manual gearbox. Celebrated for its elegant roadster styling, raw performance and unmistakable soundtrack, the Chimaera remains one of the most appealing British sports cars of its era. The 400 variant is powered by the 3,950cc Rover V8, producing around 240 bhp and delivering performance capable of 0-60 mph in approximately 5.1 seconds, with a top speed quoted at around 152 mph.

Maintenance & Condition:

This example benefits from a number of important works in recent years, most notably chassis retreatment and the fitment of new outriggers, a key consideration on any Chimaera. Further improvements include a new hood and new dashboard, with work carried out by Purbeck Sports Cars in March 2023. Additional invoices from Purbeck Sports Cars show ECU refurbishment in June 2026, repainted headlight reflectors, replacement clutch master and slave cylinders, indicator stalk replacement, chassis undersealing and wax coating, and fuel pump replacement. The level of recent attention, particularly to the chassis and associated mechanical items, should provide reassurance to prospective bidders.

History:

Accompanying the car is the original owner’s handbook, containing 14 service stamps, together with a substantial MOT history. The file is further supported by invoices from respected marque specialists Purbeck Sports Cars, documenting the recent works and ongoing maintenance. This history helps chart a pattern of care and upkeep, with particular attention paid to known Chimaera areas such as the chassis, outriggers, hood, electrics and clutch hydraulics.

The Model:

Introduced in the early 1990s, the TVR Chimaera was conceived as the slightly more civilised open-top companion to the Griffith, while still delivering the raw, unfiltered driving experience for which TVR became famous. Built around a steel backbone chassis with a composite body, the Chimaera combined low weight with Rover V8 performance, resulting in a car of considerable pace and character. The 400 model featured the 3,950cc V8, paired with the BorgWarner T5 5-speed manual gearbox. By 1997, the Chimaera had received a number of updates, including TVR’s own bespoke rear light design, following earlier improvements such as push-button door releases and revised front-end styling.

Sale Insight:

With its desirable 4.0-litre V8, manual gearbox and classic TVR styling, this Chimaera represents a highly engaging modern classic. The documented chassis retreatment and new outriggers are particularly noteworthy, as are the recent Purbeck Sports Cars invoices covering both mechanical and cosmetic attention. Offered with its original handbook, 14 service stamps and substantial MOT history, this is a well-supported example of one of TVR’s most iconic open-top sports cars.
